On September 27th, 2024, senior students of Eni Memorial High School took part in an eye-opening field trip to the renowned Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre as part of our LEAP (Leadership Engagement with Awesome People) Program. This visit provided a rare glimpse into the world of modern healthcare, equipping our students with practical knowledge, a sense of social responsibility and community-minded leadership.
The LEAP Program is designed with a mission to empower students through vital life skills, social responsibility, and meaningful community engagement. By giving students hands-on learning experiences, Tenderhearts and EMH aim to cultivate future leaders who are well-rounded, empathetic, and proactive in their communities.
Field Trip Highlights
Our students experienced a structured tour, bringing them face-to-face with the technology, commitment, and compassion that defines quality healthcare.
In the lab tour, EMH students were introduced to the critical processes behind cancer testing and diagnostics. They learned about the science that drives early detection, a key factor in effective treatment. A guided session in the MRI department offered insights into this advanced imaging technique, emphasizing its role in diagnosing complex health conditions.
In an engaging educational session, students learned about the significance of blood donation and transfusion, highlighting the life-saving impact of each donation.
The students also had a chance to handle cutting-edge medical equipment in a thrilling practical experience, demystifying the tools used by healthcare professionals to improve lives.
In a generous act of community support, the Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre extended a subsidised genotype testing offer to all Eni Memorial High students, promoting health awareness and empowering families to make informed decisions.
This immersive experience had a profound impact on students, equipping them with valuable insights into healthcare with empathy, compassion, and a desire to positively impact their communities.
"This trip opened my eyes to the importance of early cancer detection," shared Soni Okomah, JS3.
"I learned that every blood donation counts," remarked Hazel Morga, SS1, reflecting on the critical role of community contributions.
We are deeply grateful to the Asi Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre for their collaboration in supporting our LEAP program. By joining forces, we’re shaping a generation of thoughtful, responsible young adults who are ready to lead with purpose.
Through this partnership, we’re not just educating students; we’re empowering them to be proactive citizens who understand that small acts of kindness and awareness can make a big difference. Here’s to nurturing tomorrow’s leaders—one inspiring experience at a time!
